My work this offseason has been focused on evaluating quarterback prospects. Over at TwoQBs, I introduced a new metric (TANY/A*), explained how important TANY/A* and other attributes are for QB prospects, looked at quarterback draft classes from a historical perspective, and talked about all this research on a couple podcasts — the 2QB Experience Podcast with Greg Smith and RotoViz Radio Draft Series with Anthony Amico. I made this 2018 QB Draft Guide as a way to organize my thoughts, as well as statistics and visualizations for this year's QB class.
On each player profile page, there is a table of information and then some visualizations before I give my take on the QB. The table contains the following attributes and metrics. The metrics will each have a desription (Poor, Mediocre, Good, Great, or Elite) to give some context to the numbers.
School and Height are self-explanatory. Rookie Age is how old the prospect will be come September.
TANY/A* is a schedule/era-adjusted version of AY/A that includes rushing and sacks as well. Essentially, it measures how many yards per play a QB averages while accounting for TDs and interceptions. It is my favorite QB efficiency metric, since it incorporates every part of their game while adjusting for schedule and era.
Breakout Age is when the prospect posted their first season with a TANY/A* above the age trendline for first round QBs.
The value for Mobility will be a percentage that represents how much of the quarterback's production in college came from rushing. This does not translate exactly to mobility, so I was subjective with the description.
